Grasshoppers in the Field: Enchanted Highway
Regent, North Dakota
Completed in 1999, Grasshoppers in the Field features several giant grasshoppers, including the world's largest, 60 feet long with antennae 40 feet high. The Enchanted Highway sculpture was built out of old fuel and oil well tanks by Gary Greff.
The grasshoppers stand next to some similarly oversized stalks of ripe, golden wheat, which Gary deliberately made thin so that they would bend and wave in the prairie wind. "Well, metal only bends so many times before it breaks," said Gary. "That's how dumb I was."
For many years Gary would repair whichever wheat stalks broke, but nowadays he just leaves them slightly toppled. "Grasshoppers eat wheat, so I'm just gonna say they ate the wheat."
