This shoe tree definitely is not gone! As noted earlier, the tree itself is down, but there are still plenty of shoes there and it appears that people have continued to add more.
[Candace S., 03/01/2014]Shoe Tree (Grounded):- Address:
- Route 66, Amboy, CA
- Directions:
- Old Route 66, 30 miles west of Ludlow, just east of Amboy, California.
Just went thru Amboy, CA and the shoe tree has fallen down. The guy at Roy's said it fell about 4 weeks ago.
[David Kamada, 03/30/2010]The shoe tree lives in Amboy.
[Eric, 01/19/2010]This great old shoe tree barely clings to the edge of a wash, now, but still holds its own! It is easily visible, as one branch grows practically to the edge of Historic Old Route 66 (National Trails Highway) just west of the "town" of Amboy.
Another curiosity is the miles and miles of rock "graffiti" on the ground to the east. Every available rise along the road holds years of the efforts of the young, and young at heart! It seems to be the terra firma equivalent of carving initials in a tree. Be warned, though - trying to read them all as you go by can give you a good case of motion sickness!
[Kate Howard-Glenn, 01/18/2009]I found this shoe tree while traveling along old route 66 near Amboy, CA. It is easily visible from the road. It was very evident that the shoe collection is growing by the looks of many newer style shoes dangling from its branches. I didn't realize there was a shoe tree in this area, so it was a very pleasant surprise!

We've seen that Neanderthal "texting" elsewhere along desert highways, such as I-80 in Nevada. Note: Kate's shoe tree photo is from Jan. 2007, before that hefty lower limb collapsed.
