Golden Boy: AT&T's Embarrassing Mascot
Golden Boy is located outside, on the corner of S. Award and Wood Streets at the south end of AT&T Discovery Plaza. Dubbed "The Spirit of Communication," it's like a giant winged trophy topper clutching a fist of lightning bolts all tangled up in telephone cable. Bright and beautiful at night!

The stunning 28-ft. tall Golden Boy (aka "The Spirit of Communication") has been moved to the headquarters of his conquering corporate lords at 208 South Akard St., Dallas, TX. We love the big gilded lad, as much a symbol of a former monopoly, entangled in its own landlines, as a spirit of soaring communication. The move from New Jersey, refurbishment, and installation was accomplished with little fanfare. Anything to do with a giant gold-covered statue -- during a recession -- is a bit of a PR lightning bolt....
The new AT&T, even after its decades-long hiatus as a Baby Bell company (SBC), is arguably more like the old regulated AT&T than the old AT&T was after SBC spun off. Even so, they must have pondered long and hard what to do with their naked angel-man.
But Golden Boy -- Huzzah! Huzzah!

The 60-year old symbol of the "Spirit of Communication" has stood in front of corporate HQ in Basking Ridge, NJ, for decades since it was saved from the top of AT&T's original Manhattan headquarters....
