Muffler Man - Stevedore Man
Everett, Washington
Arm position: Standard
Accessories: None -- his giant wrench disappeared in the 1980s.
Nickname: Stevedore Man, Smiling Giant
The Stevedore Muffler Man looks north from the flat roof of Stevedoring Services of America, on a wide boulevard down to the water. He originally stood at a muffler shop, possibly in the 1960s. Joel Baker sent us a few photos from the late '60s/early '70s where the "Smiling Giant" is visible in front of a Muffler City repair business, and also inside a structure. He was on a trailer, so may have been flitting around the social circuit for years. The muffler shop moved to this location and the landlord let them put their guy on the roof because there wasn't enough room at street level. A few months later the shop went out of business, but the Muffler Man remained. He still has his weathered 1980s paint.
A street sign in front warns: "No Cruising Area - Max. $1,000 fine." We can understand why Everett teens out on a Saturday would want to drive by the big Stevedore fifty times....
