Moai With Glowing Red Eyes
Daytona Beach, Florida
This Easter Island head, in dark gray faux rock, may be 12 feet tall, but it's difficult to judge as it's propped atop the sign in front of the check-in entrance of the Aku Tiki Inn. Power and phone lines are strung in front of its elevated face, making photography a challenge. The eyes glow a menacing blood red.
The Polynesian themed hotel first opened in 1967. The electric letters for the name "Aku Tiki Inn" were attached directly onto the sides of the head. A stylish, curvy headdress departs from moai orthodoxy, and apparently was added decades after the stone god first appeared.
