Marker: The Carawan Ghost
In 1853 the Reverend George Carawan was charged at Beaufort County Courthouse with the murder of schoolteacher Clement Lassiter; Lassiter was believed to be a little too friendly with Carawan's wife (a charge the wife denied). Carawan killed himself after the verdict. Some say that they feel the Reverend Carawan's angry presence in the courthouse even today, along with the detached sound of gunshots and breaking glass.
