13-Foot-Tall Front Yard Indian
Lafayette, Louisiana
In 2004 Charlie DeVille bought a one-ton, 13-foot-tall bronze Indian at an auction in New Jersey. Even though he hadn't a clue what tribe of Indian the statue represented, Charlie liked it because he was himself one-eighth Chitimacha, and because he got a good deal on the price.
Charlie had the statue shipped to his Louisiana plantation, and when he sold the property and moved to a subdivision house in 2016, he brought the Indian along. Although the statue stands higher than Charlie's roof, it's been anchored in the tiny front yard, becoming Louisiana's most out-of-proportion example of lawn art.
According to a local news report, Charlie's neighbors like the statue. Charlie himself has said that when he dies he wants his ashes put inside it. "I'll go wherever he goes."
