Teddy Roosevelt Shot Here
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
On October 14, 1912, after eating a meal at the Hotel Gilpatrick, former President Teddy Roosevelt walked outside to his car and was shot point-blank by John Schrank, an insane bartender.
Schrank claimed to be acting on orders from Roosevelt's dead predecessor, William McKinley.
The bullet lodged in Roosevelt's manly chest but did no serious damage, and Roosevelt carried on with his scheduled hour-long speech. A Hyatt Regency now stands on the site, and the historical plaque that used to be bolted to the outside of the Hotel Gilpatrick is now displayed in the Hyatt lobby, along with a display of old newspaper clippings and photos of the memorable day.
