Hawaiian Rumble Golf
North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Bob Detwiler, owner of Hawaiian Rumble, boasts that his course is "the most famous one in the world." It's the home course of the U.S. ProMiniGolf Association (Bob is its president), and is the site of annual tournaments for the top mini-golfers in the country. "We use the Rolls Royce of carpet for our greens," said Bob. "The most expensive you can get. The ball rolls so true."
Of course, we knew nothing about that when we stopped by. We were attracted by Hawaiian Rumble's 30-foot-tall smoking volcano -- the first mini-golf volcano in Myrtle Beach, according to Bob. Set among hibiscus bushes and palm trees, the volcano belches flames and steam every 20 minutes. Also of note are the course's piped-in music of Don Ho and Jimmy Buffett, its real talking parrots in its clubhouse, and the fact that every golfer is given a plastic lei to wear when they play the course.
